And let’s face it employee focus and attitude from not only your back-office teams but also your front line personnel are one of the key things that enables any FM business to realise its full potential.
Research tells us that increasing employee engagement can have significant impact on the well-being of and ‘warm and friendly’ culture of the organisation. But what about profitability?
We found a few statistics that show what the difference in attitude of your staff can make to the profitability of your business:
- A 5-point increase in employee engagement is linked to a 3 point increase in revenue growth in the subsequent year1
- Organisations with a high level of engagement report 22% higher productivity2 (Engaged is defined as ‘involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace’)
- Highly engaged organisations have double the rate of success of lower engaged organisations, as well as lower rates of absenteeism and employee turnover2
- Businesses with higher engagement levels report improved quality of work and health with 48% fewer safety incidents2
But what about your business? You’re in FM and your employees are scattered about on contracts, rarely if ever attending an office you control. Engaging with these geographically dispersed remote employees can be challenging. How can your staff feel part of your organisation when they work in the field, at home or are constantly based in another company’s offices?
Mobile technology has changed the way we purchase products, consume news and communicate with friends. It has also changed the way we work, particularly for those employees who work separately from their employers’ offices.
For them, mobile access is vital, and the device they use plays a big part in their job satisfaction. What they want is the familiarity of their own device, the one they use at home on a regular basis, and the one they feel most secure and happy working with.

A company app that notifies staff of announcements and new policies and provides instant access to relevant documents and forms will help employees to feel more engaged and involved in how the company is being run.
Automating manual tasks allows your staff to get on with the job in hand, which makes everything and everyone more effective. It reduces the time spent servicing employees’ requests and enquiries meaning they receive 1st class treatment and experience reduced process lag. But of equal, if not more significance, it dramatically reduces the enterprise’s costs both in terms of time, motion and overheads.

We estimated the following percentage savings in these three areas:

We also looked at achievable time savings for managing holiday requests and pay queries.
Compare this traditional method of submitting holiday requests to an automated version:
Ten requests a year equates to a saving of £15 per annum, per employee.
With 1000 employees that’s a total saving of £15k and an admin saving of at least 50%.
We conducted the same study on managing pay queries:
Ten requests per year equates to a saving of £30 per annum, per employee.
1000 employees gives a total of £30k savings and 75% admin savings.
It’s pretty compelling stuff.
When it comes to increasing levels of employee engagement, organisations need to look at their own attitudes towards technology and decide if they’re doing enough to empower and engage their staff.

Can they access all information, documents and systems they need from their mobile device? Can they tell you about changes you need to make or make certain changes themselves as appropriate?
Can they use their own, typically higher end devices in the workplace?
